Description
This 17th century Robe is not only magnificent but also very rare! "Fabulous" exclaimed a textile expert in Ottawa, Canada, and "I have never seen anything like this before". Its age was confirmed in the 1960s by then Christies of London chairman Mr. Anthony Floyd, who called it "priceless". The British art expert Hugh Bulmer of the Antique Road Show at the Windsor Station in Montreal, Canada, in May 2005, agreed with the then estimated value of the Robe of $500,000. The Robe is in good condition, considering that it is almost 400 years old. Some areas have been repaired. According to several experts the last repair has been made about 150 years ago. The Robe has been relined many years ago with a heavy cream colored silk fabric. The Robe is made of a cream colored silk brocade with a very detailed embroidered colorful floral and foliage design made with silver threads and natural vegetable and fruit dye threads in blues, greens, oranges, burgundies and peaches. The front top of the Robe is joined by two solid metal acanthus styled clasps. The Robe measures 165 inches (=13.75 feet) around the base. The length is 50 inches in the back and 39 inches from the bottom front up to where the material for the clasps meets the edge and another 21 inches around the collar from clasp to clasp. Each metal clasp is about 3 inches square. Both clasps had repairs made to them many years ago. They have not been cleaned, nor have they been tested for composition. The Robe is very heavy, weighing over 7 pounds. It was for the last century in the possession of a very wealthy European family. Imagine that before that it had already survived the 30 year war (1618-1648) and the 7 year war (1756-1763) in Europe and the first settlement in the United States and many other world events! -There are not many things that can make this claim-. It is a Museum quality piece. Fit for a sophisticated collection as a show piece. Its rarety, beauty and its through centuries proven quality of its material and the natural indistructible dyes ,will maintain and increase its value through further generations and centuries! It is an excellent investment, a gift for centuries, unaffected by the swings of stockmarkets. It is best fit for a generous donation to a Museum to assure its continuing survival. It would look stunning illuminated and displayed (maybe on a wire frame) in a glass case for public view in a Museum, or maybe the lobby of a world corporation, or a mansion. It can't be trumped! This Robe was in its time as expensive as a castle.
